Your Flute

With over 25 years experience and interest in historical flute collecting, restoration and flute repairing, Russell strives to enable and ensure that all his students have an adequate grasp and working knowledge of basic flute care, maintenance and understanding of their instrument. Verbal as well as practical help and advice is readily given to pupils either within a lesson, or to participants attending Workshops. This has proved to be beneficial and successful over the years, resulting in minor adjustments and repairs being successfully completed and carried out by the students themselves.

BUYING A FLUTE

As purchasing a flute along with the correct headjoint can be a daunting, expensive and sometimes overwhelming experience, it is advantageous to try to obtain the best possible advice available prior to embarking on such a venture.

It is important to know not only how much you should expect to spend, bearing in mind your budget, but also to be equipped with the correct knowledge and information, which will enable you to understand the differences between the vast array and choice of flutes which are available today.

Many factors need to be considered and taken into account as it is difficult initially to distinguish between one flute and another. The quality and sound, along with the mechanism and action of the flute, is just as important as the material from which it is made. Frequently a second hand professional flute which is perhaps heavily tarnished, may prove to be a better instrument and investment than for example the purchase of a brand new flute. The headjoint is especially a key factor in making your final decision, as the sound is mostly formed in this part of the instrument. However, it is always possible to consider the option of buying a superior headjoint at a later date, as the main priority is to acquire a flute that is mechanically sound.

Russell is able not only to liaise with relevant specialist flute outlets both here and abroad, but also to give detailed individual advice, help and information which is specifically related to the student's requirements.

MAINTENANCE

As every new flute will require some adjustment and fine tuning after only a short period of time, it is essential to have your flute regularly serviced and checked.

With a Workshop adjacent to his teaching studio, Russell is able to carry out immediate straightforward repairs for his students on site. For more time consuming repairs he is also able to provide a service and overhaul along with any necessary major work which may need to be undertaken.
